Robert Kent Bowen Obituary

Robert Kent Bowen
May 22, 1949 - Jan. 31, 2018

Our courageous warrior husband, father and friend, Bob, passed away in his home following a difficult and arduous battle with cancer January 31, 2018. Born in Salt Lake City, UT to Albert and Lucile Bowen on May 22, 1949. He was the fifth of eight siblings; Barbara Brunker, David (Karen) Bowen, Beverly (Mike) Walker, Ross (JoAnn) Bowen, Mark Bowen, Julie (Curt) Elton, Stephen (Kammie) Bowen.
Bob grew up near East High, where he made many lifelong friends. He graduated from East High, where he was Seminary President, participated in multiple sports; wrestling, track and field (throwing the hammer and shot-put), and his passion, football, where he was a running back. His fondest memory was beating Highland High their senior year, where he scored two touchdowns, including a 75 yard run.
Bob often told stories about his experiences working at Cream of Weber Dairy and at Jacob Lake.
After graduating from East High, he served an LDS Mission to Sao Paulo, Brazil. He loved his mission and often told stories about his time there. Immediately after returning from his mission he began his education at the University of Utah, where he worked diligently to graduate in only two and a half years with his Bachelor's in Accounting.
Sealed to the love of his life, Lynda Bills, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They had five children; Rob (Delynn) Bowen, Brian (Becky) Bowen, Betsey Bowen, Chris (Tiffany) Bowen, and Matt Bowen. He was very proud of his family, including his eight grandchildren; Megan, Allie, Nicole, Sadie, Brooke, Bronson, Trevor, and Scarlett.
As a dedicated, loyal and hard-working individual, Bob was a CPA and partner with the firm Hansen, Barnett and Maxwell (Eide Bailey) for over 40 years. He was a member of the SEC Peer Review Committee, UACPA board member, and Treasurer of Silver Lake Water Company. He volunteered as the Treasurer and Accountant for the Skyline Lacrosse Team.
He served dutifully and diligently for the LDS Church as an Elders Quorum President, Ward and Stake Clerk, High Council, Bishop of the University 4th Student Family Ward, Youth Sunday School teacher, and many other callings.
Following his retirement from Eide Bailey, he began to renew his love of golf, which truly strengthened and helped him battle cancer. He brought old friends, new friends, and family together on the golf course rain or shine. He showed us all how to carry on and persevere through difficult times with a smile on his face.
Bob was the ultimate Ute fan and supporter of Utah Football, Basketball, and Gymnastics. A Crimson Club member for over 30 years, he never missed a game, no matter the weather. For the last three years, this often meant attending games wearing a chemo pump, and feeling quite sick. That didn't deter him at all. He also went on several trips to see the Utes play in bowl games and he loved going to the PAC 12 Basketball Tournament in Las Vegas, NV.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Lucile Ross Bowen, father, Albert R. Bowen, brother Mark Jensen Bowen and step-mother Margaret Jensen Bowen.
We love you and promise to always wear red, to always cheer loud, to stay until the whistle blows and to honor our favorite Utah Man.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, February 5, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Olympus 4th Ward, 2675 E 4430 S, Salt Lake City, UT. Visitations will be held Sunday, February 4 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E 1300 S, Salt Lake City, UT and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 am at the ward prior to services. Bob Bowen passed away today. Very sad to lose such a great young man. I miss those good days with him at Laird Park, Bonneville, Clayton, East. He was a very good friend to me, and he will be greatly missed.

Bob's incredible perseverance throughout the duration of his ordeal has been astounding to me. He truly valued life in mortality and wanted to squeeze that last ounce of  enjoyment of it, even with the pain, before moving on. Through the last couple of years, he taught us how to live and how not to die. What a man. He reminds me of the poem about the determined soul.: .....

Why, even Death stands still,
           And waits an hour sometimes
For such a will.

We remember Bob's wonderful life, and the joys he has brought to so many.    Certainly, Bob has "fought a good fight".  So many of you have "been there" for Bob, as he has experienced many challenges through these past years.  Your gifts of time and love have helped him immeasurably.

We express our heartfelt sympathy to Bob's sweet wife, Lynda, to their children and other loved ones - to all who mourn the passing of this good man.
