Herbert and I met through the intramural wrestling competitions in Junior High. He amazed me with his astounding strength and agility. I do not recall anyone he competed with besting him on the mat. As a result of our competition we became good respectful friends.
Herbert was quiet and a bit of a recluse. But he had many friends and a delightful humor even though he seemed a sober fellow. Herbert was Native American and I'm glad to say having his friendship not only provoked respect for his people, but my life was the better for knowing him. I never dreamed he would leave us so soon. The world lost a good soul when he passed on.
