Alice Elaine Clark Cannon

1949-2003

Alice Elaine Clark Cannon passed away Sunday evening, December 14, 2003, after a four month illness. Alice's passing came just a few days after she finally could no longer speak well enough to tell us she loved us. Her passing at this time is a miracle and a blessing as she is now free from her infirmities and while we miss her greatly, we rejoice in her liberation to her heavenly home.

Alice had a remarkable ability of being able to touch people's hearts and to let them know she had an interest in them and wanted them to succeed. She touched both young and old. The many who came to visit her during her illness reflected this influence. We wish to thank all those who have been so kind and helpful and supportive of Alice and her family during this extended illness. We love you and appreciate you so much.

Born in Palo Alto, California on October 20, 1949, to Norman W. and Lois Colt Clark, Alice graduated from East High School in Salt Lake City in 1968. Her high school friends were a blessing to her all of her life. She joined Delta Gamma Sorority and participated in many other activities, including Mortar Board, at the University of Utah, from which she graduated in 1972.

Alice married Wayne Hales Cannon, the love of her life, in the Salt Lake Temple on March 7, 1975. She taught English at Bonneville Junior High School while Wayne attended medical school. Alice and Wayne were blessed with four darling and remarkable children: Allison, Clark, Libby, and Becky. Alice loved her children more than anything in the world. She treasured all of those she met and worked with at her children's schools, but especially her children's friends. We are so grateful to the faculty and students at Uintah Elementary and East High schools, particularly the Volleyball and Basketball teams and coaches, the Madrigals and A'cappella for their friendship and support the last few months and Clark and Ali's friends who have been so kind and helpful.

Alice turned her tremendous gifts as a homemaker into an art that blessed many with delicious food and candy, beautiful quilts, and sewing. If you know Alice, you have received cookies, dinner, chocolates, or a voice message.

Alice was a faithful, active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When it became clear she would not get better, her words to a dear neighbor were "I love my Heavenly Father and I love Jesus Christ." Most who visited her in her last days heard her testimony of this. She served in the Bonneville Second Ward and the Salt Lake Bonneville Stake as ward and stake Relief Society president, ward Young Women president, and in many other callings. Alice felt her ward members and other neighbors were family, and she loved them dearly. She was serving as Enrichment Counselor in the University Fifth Stake at the time of her death.

Alice is survived by her husband, Dr. Wayne H. Cannon, and their four children, Allison, Clark, Libby, and Becky; mother Lois C. Clark; parents-in-law George I. and Isabel Cannon; siblings Dr. Carol L. Clark, N. Warren (Marilyn) Clark, Stanford J. Clark, and sister-in-law, Liz Nibley Clark. Alice is preceded in death by her father, Norman W. Clark, and her brother, Stewart F. Clark.

Special thanks to dear friends who spent countless hours in the last six weeks at her side, brightening her day and helping her endure this final test. Also thanks to the wonderful staffs at Bryner Clinic, Salt Lake Clinic, LDS Hospital, the Moran Eye Center, IHC Hospice Care, and Home Options Senior Care.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 18, 2003, at 12 Noon, at the Bonneville Stake Center, 1535 E. Bonneview Drive (1050 So.). A visitation will be held Wednesday, December 17, from 5:30 - 8:00 p.m., at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E. 1300 So., and Thursday at the Stake Center from 10:30 - 11:55 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations to a charity of your choice or LDS Hospital Foundation.
